OCTOBER 21ST

10.00 – 12.00 SEMINAR GROUPS TO DISCUSS EXAMPLES OF SKETCHBOOK PRACTICE

This seminar really opened my eyes to stop being afraid of my sketchbook and just be messy, be creative, write down thought processes as they’re happening not at the end when I used to just cram in all my information and not really take time to read it or use it in my development.

1.15 LECTURE/AESTHETICS; VENUE: CANALSIDE WEST, LECTURE THEATRE10

Google ‘aesthetics’ and ‘design’ and you get this kind of thing:
‘By providing an education in the artistic language of vision, the future engineers will be better able to incorporate aesthetic value into their design work.’
or
-‘ to ‘finish’ the ceiling the design of borders and trims answer many aesthetics questions’
or
‘One means for maximizing acceptance is to incorporate aesthetic guidelines into the design of wind turbines and wind power plants.’
These examples have one thing in common – they regard ‘aesthetics’ as something to be added to a design. They may be confusing ‘aesthetic’ and ‘style’ or ‘decoration’.

Aesthetic is sense perception.
Louis Sullivan writes his famous words “Form ever follows function. This is the law.

11TH NOVEMBER

10.00 – 12.00 SEMINAR GROUPS TO DISCUSS GOOD AND BAD TYPOGRAPHY

The thing that caught my eye about this was how the writing actually looks like water, the curves at the end of the J and the n picture waves in my head. The smaller writing is placed inside the circles like a tidal pool and you look at it like you’re looking down into the bottom of the pool.

The first thing I noticed about this piece was the lines actually curve off the text and create images, the lettering has so much character it almost looks like leaves and roots. With the words they’ve used they really bring them to life, I find this type beautiful and exciting as it’s fancy, artistic, eloquent and looks like a lot of time and effort went into making it.

I love typography like this where it looks like an image, It isn’t a whole outline of a light bulb but the text is an invitation to the lighting exhibition of 2008 object design.

It’s a fun quirky way of getting a glance of attention over other competitors. Because you only have to look at the shape to know what the writing is about.

They were my opinions of good typography.

I took that idea and put it on Photoshop, to add a more graffiti look, and colour.
I printed this out onto Matte paper and it looked like I’d actually painted on it.
Really happy with this piece.

The outside sign of Herbert’s Bar.

The outside sign of Herbert’s Bar.

Most of the doodles are in my sketchbook, but I developed him into Herbert actually going into Herbert’s Bar and looking at the interior, the things on the walls, the feel and atmosphere of the place.
I immediately felt like it was an expensive place because of how professional and fancy it looked from walking inside.
The waitress and waiters were smartly dressed too and had an elegant persona about them.

So in developing Herbert who started out as a round blob with two arms and a middle belly. I gave him a pipe and moustache a suite and tie, and a name badge and turned him into the hypothetical version of Herbert I had created, and gave the waitress and chef the same kind of attire.
The brief was create a character - Herbert, being influenced by Herbert looks to the stars.
I had this idea that Herbert looks to the stars was meaning for he wants his bar to be successful and it’s all that is on his mind is getting it to be the highest rating place around. So I put them in a space background in the style of Kid Acne, but tried to mix it with my own drawing style.
